Isobel Ewing

Isobel Ewing is joining the 2016 Young Blake Expedition in a media and communications role. Isobel is a journalist for Mediaworks, reporting on 3News and the Paul Henry Show. She previously worked at the Taranaki Daily News for two years, during which time she was a finalist for two Canon Media Awards – Science & Environment Reporter of the Year and Student Journalist of the Year. She was awarded a grant by the Asia New Zealand Foundation in 2013 to work at the Deccan Herald, the largest English-speaking newspaper in South India, based in Bangalore. Read her blog about living and working in India here. Isobel has a bachelor of arts majoring in Classics from the University of Canterbury and a postgraduate diploma in Journalism from Massey University.

Isobel grew up in Hamilton, but spent her summers tramping with her family throughout the South Island or around the Coromandel Peninsula where she learnt to dive. As a trail runner and skier, she was imbued with respect and appreciation for the natural world from an early age. She hopes to use her role in the media to highlight threats to the environment and effect change in its protection and preservation. Her intrepid tendencies have taken her through Asia, North and South America and the Pacific islands but the Auckland Islands will be an entirely new experience. She’s thrilled at the opportunity to learn how the Subantarctic’s unique biodiversity is affected by the planet’s changing climate. Isobel is currently based in Wellington.
