Rachel Taulelei is the founder of Yellow Brick Road Ltd, and is described as having led change in the New Zealand fishing industry. She has had phenomenal success in the development of an innovative sustainable supply of fresh fish to restaurants across the country.
Determined to understand every link in the food supply chain, Rachel is equally comfortable in open sea fishing boats as in some of New Zealand’s finest restaurants. This approach has allowed her to build a virtual team which has overcome one of the most difficult problems in the industry – the ability to source a sustainable supply of responsibly caught fresh premium seafood.
She has a strong commitment to having a values-based business focussed on the sustainability of the resource and this is the hallmark of her leadership and company. Rachel’s passion for the industry goes beyond her business as she shares her insights and knowledge as a regular presenter for Radio New Zealand’s Kai Moana series and a contributor to food magazines.
Alongside chef Martin Bosley, Rachel co-founded the not-for-profit incorporated society which runs the City Markets in Wellington. As well as being a weekly outlet for high quality locally produced food, it provides advice and business mentoring for new artisan producers, who often struggle with the business model.
Rachel also contributes to the growth of Wellington as a city, acting on the board of Grow Wellington and as a mentor to a number of start-up companies in Wellington.
late 2015 Rachel sold Yellow Brick Road and assumed the role of CEO Kono NZ.
